These are just a few of the cool stickers that caught my eye -

mainly from the 70's. It was hard to select only a few!

Dance: Carolina Shag

THE DANCE

The 'Carolina Shag' dance originated in the 1930's on the shores of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and is now the state dance of South Carolina.

The 'Carolina Shag' is a six-count partner dance done mostly to moderate tempo music. During the dance the upper body and hips hardly move as the legs do kicks and fancy footwork. The lead is the center of attention, and the partners steps either mirror the lead's or mark time while the lead shows off with spins etc.

I was lucky enough to visit Myrtle Beach, South Carolina during my time
as an exchange student in South Carolina during high school.

Family friends of my host family patiently tried to teach me the Carolina Shag, but even their collective years of experience were lost on my embarassing effort.

It really is alot harder than it looks!

THE PAVILION

The Pavilion, the heart of Myrtle Beach and the home of The Shag, stood grand on Ocean Boulevard and backed directly onto the beachfront. The dance hall packed in crowds for dancing and concerts. In addition to beach music bands, the Pavilion was also host to Jerry Lee Lewis, The Temptations, Journey and more in it's day.

The original Pavilion built early 1900's, burnt to the ground in 1920.

It was rebuilt three years later then expanded into a double storey building in 1927.

And it was here in this building, that people came to be part of a dance that would evolve into The Shag.

When fire claimed this building in 1944, plans were made to build something sturdier. The new structure, which was to become the beloved Pavilion (pictured in postcards above & below) was a reinforced concrete building built to withstand anything. And it did being one of the only buildings on the beachfront to still be standing after Hurricane Hazel in 1954.

But as of 2006, developers had their way and the Pavilion was closed.

A year later, despite massive community outcry, the building

and theme park surrounding were demolished.

It's said that the land still lays bare more than 5 years later.

Such a shame and a terrible waste.

I love this movie! (B grade city, but I still love it).

Great music, 60's fashions, cars, houses, furniture, throw in a talent contest, a dance contest, & some nasty rivals - all filmed mostly in and around locations in Myrtle Beach.

Country band Alabama had a single 'Dancin', Shaggin' on the Boulevard' paying tribute to their musical heritage. The song is reflecting on the bands days playing clubs in Myrtle Beach South Carolina.

So there you have it!

The Carolina Shag.

Not just a dance, but an old school culture of summer nights, ocean breezes,

beach music, and good times on the boulevard : )

Waverley Antique Bazaar

Had a great day of thrifting over the weekend with fellow Blogger

and new friend Pippa of 'Ouchflower'!

Turns out we both shopped at the our local retro/vintage store
aka The Man regularly, but had never met or crossed paths.
Then Michael (The Man) put us onto each others blogs, and I
became a regular visitor to OuchFlower.

And after bumping into eachother one day at The Man,

Pippa and I decided to book a date and head out for some thrifting together!

Our chosen stop on our first trip was the
Waverley Antique Bazaar
11a Aristoc Road, Glen Waverley
Open 7 days a week 10am - 5pm.

The Bazaar is located in a huge warehouse full of fantastic retro and

vintage goods - for the most part priced really, really well.
The Bazaar opened in October 2011 and now houses over 130 stalls.

It was a blistering hot day but we put in a good 2 hours

of seeking out treasures in the warehouse.

True to form, I purchased a few floral themed pieces.

So today I am linking in with Pippa from Ouchflower.

Luckily there were 2 of these gorgeous plates, so we bought one each.

Floral mugs which I am now planning to hang on hooks from a

shelf above the kettle.

Floral tin and wall hanging just coz.

Marquise shaped Tigers Eye ring. My favourite purchase of the day.

At least, I think it's Tigers Eye. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

(Are you feeling the garden stone? I couldn't get the ring to sit

well on the bench so I needed a prop.)

And this awesome chemistry flask/come vase was a gift to me from Pippa!

Nabbed some greenery from the garden for this shot.

Hope I did it justice Pippa : )

Highly recommend a trip to the Waverley Antique Bazaar if you are in Melbourne. And I also recommend a date with Pippa.

She bought me lunch - hoorah!!

PoP! Goes My Heart

In the film Music and Lyrics (2007), Hugh Grant plays Alex Fletcher,

an 80's pop star 'has been' from a band called PoP!

The opening scene of the movie is the film clip to PoP!'s

big 1984 hit 'PoP! Goes My Heart'.

The clip still makes me laugh, and the song sticks in my head for days.

Incidentally, Hugh Grant does his own singing throughout the entire movie.

"You are GOLD and SILVA HA HA!!"

Retro Beach Retreat - South Australia

Came across this very cool 1950's built holiday house in South Australia

called the 'Aldinga Beach Retreat'.

With it's cool 50's themed interior, large backyard for BBQ's and kids to enjoy, and a stones throw (one house back) from Aldinga Beach - it looks like the perfect way to spend a few lazy weeks one summer.

Le Sausage

Le Sausage is bringing the tastiest gourmet sausages
to the good people of Melbourne, in the funkiest red food truck around!

The truck itself was originally owned by the NSW fire brigade,
who had maintained it beautifully all it's life. It already had a kitchen inside,
and was used by the fire brigade as a food truck -
taken to fires to feed the firemen and women on site.

Given that the truck was already in such good condition when purchased,
Le Sausage only had to make a few restorations to update the kitchen.

The fabulous Retro Pin Up artwork was created for Le Sausage
by a close friend of the owners - she is a looker!

Le Sausage is available for functions, events, and parties etc.

opens in Australian cinemas today.

Yeah, I know it's not the original trilogy, yadda yadda yadda,

but it's STAR WARS all the same and I am pumped!

Can't wait to see what the original trilogy looks like up on
the big screen in 3D, when we finally get to the original films.

Judi Oyama - Skating Photos

I love these fantastic photos of skater Judi Oyama,

early in her skating career.

Judi began skating in 1973 when she was 13 years old,

and still competes in slalom racing today at 52!

Judi founded Maximum Impact Design in 1987,

designing graphics for surf, snow and skateboard brands worldwide.

She is also President of Board Rescue, a non for profit corporation

dedicated to providing skateboard equipment to children: targeting

low-income children and at risk-youth.

I have added Judi's captions with each photo (from Flickr) ,

as each shot has it's own unique story, and they are a great read.

Spent 5 weeks in Hawaii at the end of 1978 right after the Skateboardmania tour ended.

I always had a board. I sent it home thinking I was going to take a break and there won't be any skate spots. Tossed my converse shoes in the trash after a muddy hike and the next day I meet a guy who asks me out of the blue if I skateboard.

He lent me this board and invited me to session at his ramp. I had to buy some new shoes!

Released as a single in 1997 by trio Judith Durham (The Seekers),
Russell Hitchcock (Air Supply) and Mandawuy Yunupingu (Yothu Yindi).

But, it's the Telstra Ad version of the song, used by the
telecommunications company in 2003, that I love best.

I remember it being a big deal being able to go out and buy my own music.

I had the old family record player (handed down from my sister) in my room, and the sound was so much better than what my little tape player could manage with cassettes, so records it was.

The first two 45' singles I bought were

'Got My Mind Set On You' by George Harrison and

'Chained to the Wheel' by The Black Sorrows.

Promising start for my musical taste.

Little did I know that NKOTB

were around the corner with 'The Right Stuff' - and I was gone.

Elvis: That's The Way It Is

Elvis: That's The Way It Is, was released in November 1970.
The documentary film follows Elvis as he prepares for opening night of
The Elvis Summer Festival
at The International Hotel, Las Vegas in August 1970.

The movie contains alot of behind the scenes footage,

rehearsals with the band and the concert itself.

Horses & Australian Film

Like most little girls, at one point growing up, I loved horses.

Or more the 'idea' of horses I should say.

The few times that I actually did ride a horse when I was young, always seemed to end badly, with me in tears having a little 'turn'. And that was always riding the slowest, oldest, and smallest horse that the each stable had!!
(perhaps a Shetland pony would've done the trick?!)

The trouble was not the horses though, it was me.

I was just completely petrified sitting tall up on those horses, and after a few attempts I gave up, and gave in to the fact that horses were simply not for me, and I haven't ridden since.

But, although I am not one with the horse world, I can truly appreciate their strength, speed and beauty.

Two of my favourite Australian films from the 80's both centre around horses -
The Man from Snowy River (1982) & Phar Lap (1983).

Tom Burlinson starred and rode in both films. He had very little horse riding experience prior to filming The Man From Snowy River in 1982 and performed all of his own riding stunts in the first film, including the amazing descent scene.

Station owner Harrison's (Kirk Douglas) prized colt has joined a herd of wild horses called The Brumby Mob. Harrison offers a large reward attracting riders and fortune hunters from every station in the area. Jim (Tom Burlinson) has been accused of letting the colt loose, and rides with them to retrieve the colt and clear his name.

After several race losses, owner Davis (Ron Leibman) has run out of patience and tells trainer Telford (Martin Vaughan), if Phar Lap doesn't win this race,
he will have to be sold.
Leading up to the race, strapper Tommy Woodcock (Tom Burlinson) has been trying a new method of track work with promising results, allowing Phar Lap to start slower and come from behind. But if the new training proves unsuccessful in this race, Telford will be sent into bankruptcy, Phar Lap sold and Tommy out of a job.

Phar Lap Movie fact: The United States version of the film is played out in a more traditional way, with the film opening with Phar Lap getting off the boat from New Zealand. This was done to make the film more dramatic as the story of Phar Lap was not well known in the United States.

And finally, I love the first couple of minutes from the
Sydney 2000 Olympic Opening Ceremony.
(It's not a film but hey, roll me with...)
It features 120 riders and their horses to the beautiful music from
The Man From Snowy River by Bruce Rowland.
I particularly love the lone rider that first rides out and cracks the whip.
Yep, it stirs abit of Aussie pride every time I watch it.

And well, I reckon that'll about do me for horses for a good year or two!

Anglesea Paddle Boats

Happy 2012!

Still rather in holiday mode over here, so it's only fitting that my first post for 2012 is related to my recent holiday.

One of my favourite places in the entire world is the seaside town of Anglesea,

at the beginning of the Great Ocean Road in Victoria.

Driving through the town, you cross a bridge over the Anglesea River.

And as you cross the bridge, to the left, there is a a tourist attraction that has been there for as long as I can remember - Anglesea Paddle Boat and Canoe Hire.

Adrian Booth is the owner of business, and has been delivering fun on the Anglesea river to tourists and locals alike since 1978.

They also cater for canoe hire to school and community groups.

Adrian still owns the 14 or so original wooden paddle boats that were once used on the river, but are now securely stored. Would be so great to see them back out on the river one day!

In fact, Jenny made 3 different style of aprons, & myself

& our two other besties all received one for Christmas

presents at our annual Christmas catch up!

We were so chuffed, we wore them for the rest of the afternoon.

Andy Williams Christmas CD is one of my favourite choices

for Christmas music and some holiday cheer.

I also have the 'Andy Williams Christmas Specials' DVD.

It contains highlights and Andy's personal favourite numbers
from the Christmas Specials he did during the 60's and early 70's.

Here is a short clip of one of one of the numbers from the DVD...

(Please note the guy in the front of the Sleigh with Andy wearing the horn rimmed glasses. Surely he would've been better off tucked away at the back of the sleigh in that scene? He doesn't even know the words!)

There is a line in the bridge of this song 'Sleigh Ride'
from the clip above, that brings us to the Pumpkin Pie section of this post.

The line is...

'There's a happy feeling nothing in the world can buy,

When they pass around the coffee and the pumpkin pie...'

Pumpkin Pie is not a dessert most Australians are familiar with,
or have indeed ever tried, so I was intrigued and inspired
by the song lyric to have a bash and make one.

Several years ago, mum and I both sourced our own recipes online.

I'm sure there are hundreds of variations, but this is my recipe.
And it makes two tasty pies...

Pumpkin Pie

1 1/4 cup Pumpkin Puree (I use Kent Pumpkins)

1 cup brown sugar (firmly packed)

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

1 teaspoon cinnamon

2 eggs

1 cup Evaporated Milk

2 tablespoons water

1/2 teaspoon vanilla essence

2 Pampas Sweet Flan cases

(from the frozen pastry section at supermarket.

Hey man, I never said I was Martha Stewart...)

Cut and cook Pumpkin. Puree or Mash. Cool.

Combine Pumpkin, sugar, salt and spice.

Then add eggs. Mix well.

Add Evaporated milk, water, vanilla. Mix well.

Brush pastry case edges with milk to stop them from burning.

Pour mixture into pastry shells.

Bake at 200 degrees for 15 mins.

Reduce to 180 degrees for 35 mins.

Beautiful served with thickened or whipped cream : )

Kyrie - Mr Mister 1985

I keep hearing this song on the radio, so I've taken

it as a sign to pop it on the blog.

I love this tune!

It still gets a decent amount of airplay to this day.

I admit to never really knowing what the lyrics to the chorus were -

Something about 'Kerry and a laser down the road that I must travel....?!'

or 'Carrying a laser through the darkness of the night... ?!'

Am I alone on that one?

But Google has since solved this for me - the chorus is actually

'Kyrie eleison'

which loosely translated means 'Lord have mercy'.

So there you go!

Learn something knew everyday.

- The Annual Council Hard Rubbish Collection!

I don't drive around the streets poking through each and every pile,

but I admit I have my eye out as I am driving along.

You never know what hidden treasures might be found!

Witness 1985

starring Harrison Ford and Kelly McGillis.

A young Amish boy is sole witness to a murder; policeman John Book (Ford)

goes into hiding in Amish country to protect him until the trial.

Nominated for 8 Academy Awards including Best Actor for Harrison Ford.

His only Oscar nomination to date.

Christmas Paper Bunting

This beautiful 'Merry Christmas' paper bunting was

made by my beautiful, and talented friend, Emma.

(How pretty is her tree?!!)

Emma used vintage sheet music (purchased from 'the man'),

to print the letters on, to create this gorgeous bunting.

So pretty, and old world Christmassy.

I love it!

I don't drink a gallon a day or anything, maybe only a can or so a week -

certainly not enough to rot my innards or teeth (well, maybe my teeth...)

But there is no denying, that sometimes a can of coke

simply just hits the spot - Coke is it.

I also loved the Coke ad's from many moons ago,

with their catchy tunes and phrases.

hunter gatherer Royal Arcade

This sign stopped me in my tracks on a recent visit to the city,

whilst wandering through the Royal Arcade off Bourke St Mall.

The shop is hunter gatherer run by the Brotherhood of St Laurence.

The store is a great mix of secondhand vintage goods, upcycled wares

and new jewellery pieces/items made by local artists.

The vintage stock is specially handpicked from thousands of items donated

to the 27 Brotherhood of St Laurence Op Shops - so it's all the good stuff!

Trouble was, the 'Back in 10 mins' sign was up & the shop was closed -

('Arrrhhhh! Please let me in!!!' I screamed in my head) but, I had to keep moving.

So, I managed to get a few (albeit horrid - please accept my apologies) photos of the shop on my phone, and hope to get back there (or to the Brunswick store) to purchase one day very soon.

I finally bought my very own retro bike off eBay!

Single gear/speed, Malvern Star with it's original bell, tyre pump,
chain cover and plenty of surface rust to boot. But, I love it.

It still has it's original stickers in relatively good condition which is great.

And judging by the style and colours of these stickers, I would say the
bike is from the 70's?

The thought of me having a bike, or indeed riding a bike has become
the source of much amusement to my friends and family.

'You? You bought a bike? Why?!'
was heard just earlier this week from a visiting pal, while
she stood gazing at my new treasure with great confusion.

I am not really one with the world of exercise (to put it mildly), but I figure a bike is the perfect way to ease myself into some form of exercise this summer.
This way I can ride my bike round to the milk bar to get a Snickers bar.

This same friend then gathered some excitement at the thought of us
going for a bike ride together soon, & suggested we head off to a cafe
in a bayside suburb several kilometres away!

'Steady on' came my hasty reply,
'let's just see if I can make it round the block first!'

So, my intentions are pure.

May I enjoy cycling round the neighbourhood for many months to come.

If not, there is a high probability that this awesome bike will end up
as a great wall feature in our garage/bar area like this...

I purchased this vintage lounge at the beginning of the year.

I loved the floral print, and dark wood arms, but alas,

I could never really make it work in my house.

I no longer have room to store it - so before I turn into one of those Hoarder's who wonders where her pets are disappearing too, (anyone remember the Augustine episode? Truly the stuff of nightmares),

this beautiful, clean, vintage piece is headed for ebay.

The Bionic Woman

The Bionic Woman is an American television series, which starred the beautiful Lindsay Wagner. It aired for three seasons between 1976 and 1978 as a spin off from The Six Million Dollar Man.

Wagner stars as tennis pro Jaime Sommers, and an old flame of
Steve Austin (Lee Majors), The Six Million Dollar Man.

During a skydiving outing together, Jaime's parachute malfunctions and she suffers critical injuries. Steve pleads with his boss Oscar to save Jaime's life using Bionics, commiting her to become an operative for the Office of Scientific Intelligence (OSI) a branch of the CIA, as he was, if the Bionic's are successful.
Oscar agrees and the Bionics team rebuild her.

As the result of Jaime's Bionics, she has amplified hearing in her right ear, a greatly strengthened right arm, and stronger and enhanced legs which enable her to run at up to 60 miles per hour.

The TV Series spawned it's own line of toys (as had The Six Million Dollar Man).

But no, this post is about my friend Stacey, and a few pics of the

fabulous retro wares she owns.

Stacey is also one clever lass, and creates gorgeous baby blankets,

bunting, noticeboards and paper garlands.

Awesome sideboard from Vinnies. I still remember getting Stacey's call that day - "I'm looking at two sideboards at Vinnies and can't decide which one to get - help!"

Running under the Sprinkler

First Car - 1978 Datsun Sunny

My first car when I turned 18 was a used 1978 White Datsun Sunny.

It wasn't flash, or pretty, but as dad kept saying,

"You just need something to get you from A to B."

And that it did.

Aside from my less than desirable manual skills -

(I'm a firm believer in If you can't find em', Grind em'),

this car took abit of a beating.

From empty petrol tanks, push starts, jump starts, flat tyres, the odd

run in with a car park pole (or shopping trolley), one or two minor bingles,

and countless issues with starter motors.

But it served it's purpose well, and saw me safely

through my first few years on the road.

What was your first car?

(Had to chop my head out. The early 90's were not

kind to my hair...or sense of fashion so it would seem...)
