Star Wars Week - Iron on Transfers

This was my first ever eBay purchase!
A 1977 STAR WARS Iron on Transfer book. It has 16 different fantastic designs.
I can still remember that little rush of glee when I won the item, and I have been hooked on eBay ever since.

I love that C-3PO and R2-D2 are listed as See Threepio and Artoo Detoo on these transfers. This is how they were originally named, and are listed as such on the end credits of STAR WARS Episode IV A New Hope in 1977, with the abbreviated names in brackets.
Each consecutive movie (including the prequels) dropped the full name and simply used C-3PO and R2-D2.
Little bit of STAR WARS trivia on this sunny Sunday!

Star Wars Week - Vadar's moves

I'm afraid it doesn't get more awesome than this.
STAR WARS weekend at Disney Hollywood Studios
'Dancing with the STAR WARS Stars'.
Darth Vadar and Stormtroopers dancing to 'Beat It' by Michael Jackson.

Stormtrooper back up dancer - I believe this may be my dream job.

Star Wars 1977

I am a huge STAR WARS fan.
I feel one post couldn't possibly be enough, so I have decided to unleash the STAR WARS geek within, and dedicate this week to the original STAR WARS Trilogy.

I have always loved the scene in Episode IV A New Hope,
where Luke looks wistfully out toward the twin suns of Tatooine

Brilliant cinematography, and beautiful score by John Williams.
Love it.

the Retro House, an Argus 75 Viewfinder Camera & eBay

I came across this fantastic Retro House on Flickr by Jon of Boomerang Thang
The house alone is worthy of a post in my eyes, but it's the story accompanying the photo that equally caught my attention. If you are an eBay hunter and gatherer such as myself, I'm sure you will enjoy.

Following by

The Boomerang 1962

This is a shot of my house taken through an Argus 75 Viewfinder Camera with my digital camera. In my mind, this is what my casa looked like back in '62 when it was built.

UPDATE-These shots have some extra meaning for me now. Below is an email I received from the seller of the Argus 75 I purchased off ebay. It should make you think twice if you think ebay sellers are just there to make a buck. It also is an example of why I love vintage collectibles so much. There is a rich history and story behind every item-a story which typically goes untold. But, in this case, the story of Helen's father's camera begins a new chapter:
Jon,
Thanks so much for the very nice feedback!! I tried, in the
very limited space, to return the favor.
At first, I was kind of disappointed the camera didn't
sell for more. It really was my father's and I guess I
had way too much sentimental value going on. But you've
been so very nice, I think my dad would be happy.
I hope it really still works. He (I) would be glad to know
it isn't just wasting away somewhere.
Thanks again for a wonderful eBay experience. People like
you make me remember that it is a fun thing to do.
Thanks,
Helen

Pretty great isn't it?
Jon has since sent Helen a link to the above photos and she was very pleased to see her father's camera revived and being put to good use...: )

Alex Brown - Shout (1985), Girls Just Want To Have Fun

Great song & video clip from one of my favourite 80's dance movies -
Girls Just Want to have Fun, and the respective soundtrack.
(Lovin' Alex Browns entrance into the video clip -
popping out of the car boot. Very tidy.)

New girl in town Janey meets cool new friend Lynne. They hit a dance audition together, and make an enemy of the nasty, rich girl Natalie ('Decisions are the worst!'). Only Janey gets through to the next round, & gets hot guy Jeff for a dance partner. They butt heads, practice & train for the big dance competition at the end. The prize getting to be a new regular dancer on their favourite show Dance TV.

Throw in some great songs, fashions, bit of drama, romance, and of course Helen Hunt & the legendary Sarah Jessica Parker...whats not to like?!

Milk Bar

The Milk Bar, as it is known as in my part of the world, is the local shop, or corner store where you can buy your milk, bread, ice creams and newspapers.

When visiting friends in Queensland a few years back, I asked where I could find the nearest milk bar to go grab some ice creams to which our host Keno replied...

"The Milk Bar?! What is this, 1955?"

This got me thinking - is the term Milk Bar just a Melbourne thing?
(I have since found out that no, parts of Sydney and NSW, and perhaps other corners of Australia, also wander down to their local Milk Bar for the milk & a newspaper on a Sunday morning.)

Although there are fewer Milk Bars today than there once were, most people still have a milk bar within walking distance or a short drive from their home.
Yes it's an old retro term for the corner shop or store, but I LIKE it!!
It's a little bit of our early to mid century history that should be embraced.

So, this ones for Keno - A salute to the Milk Bar.
Some great photos of vintage Milk Bar signs (sadly, the sign is all thats left from some old stores), to some current Milk Bars still happily thriving in suburbia today.

A big thank you to all the Flickr folk who thought the old Milk Bar shop or sign was worthy of a photo, and for allowing me to share them here.

Enjoy!
And if you fancy leaving a comment - what is the 'Milk Bar' called in your corner of the world?

The Milk Bar round the corner from my folks where I grew up - still alive and kicking. Full bag of mixed lollies for $1. Ahhh, those were the days.

Freaky Friday - One Piece Suit

Yes, the picture of this guy in his tidy one piece jumpsuit, grasping that pole is a little unnerving. But its the written sales pitch accompanying the picture, that amped it up to Freaky Friday status.

Wrong on so many levels.

Diff'rent Strokes - Awesome TV Tunes

Now, the world don't move to the beat of just one drum,
What might be right for you, may not be right for some,
A man is born, he's a man of means,
Then along come two, they got nothing but their jeans,

But they got, Diff'rent Strokes,
It takes, Diff'rent Strokes,
It takes, Diff'rent Strokes to move the world,

Everybody's got a special kind of story,
Everybody finds a way to shine,
It don't matter that you got, not alot,
So what,
They'll have theirs, You'll have yours and I'll have mine,
And together we'll be fine...

Because it takes, Diff'rent Strokes to move the world,
Yes it does,
It takes, Diff'rent Strokes to move the world.

Try and not sing that for the rest of the day!!
