On The Move

Hello there!

Just a quick one to say g'day and let you know I am moving house this week.

Change of Internet and phone provider means our new home won't have the Internet
and phone installed for a week or so. (Say what now?! No Internet?!!)

Until then, I will collect a trailer load of freaky folk to present to you in a Freaky Friday very soon.

I hope you are all happy and well.

- Donna x

Many thanks to Ray Cunningham for allowing me to use this original photograph he took in 1972.
I love it - one of my new faves.

Cheers & Happy Holiday Break 2013!

Where did 2013 go?

Many thanks to any and all for dropping into Hung Up On Retro this year, and a big
thanks to my kind blogging friends, new and old, that have dropped me a line or comment.

It's time to crack open the bottle and enjoy the festive season.
I'll probably be loitering around on Instagram and Facebook over
the Summer Holidays, so I will keep in touch with a few of you there.

Cheers and have a Holly Jolly Christmas!

Stay Freaky.

1970s Photography - Flip Schulke Part 2

Photographer Flip Schulke documented everyday life in the Florida Keys and New Ulm, Minnesota during the 1970s for the Documerica project. While University teaching, Flip recruited several of his students to photograph New Elm and supplement his own photographs. Here are a few of my favourites with their original captions from Flip's set on Flickr.

The last photograph is probably one of my favourite photos I have ever featured here on the blog.
Kids hanging out on a summers day with no where to be, just shooting the breeze.
Reminds me of humid, summer afternoons and nights spent with friends out the front of my house as a kid, when the only things we had to worry about were the mosquitoes and heading home before dark.

1970's College Years - Photography by Ed Uthman

I love these cool photographs by Ed Uthman, taken during his college years
in the early 1970's at Rhodes College, Memphis, Tennessee.

It was hard to select only a few from Ed's great photographs in this set
on Flickr (link on Ed's name above). Hope you enjoy the shots I've gone with.

Many thanks to Ed for allowing me to share his work here today. : )

"This was one of the first photos I shot on campus, and it remains my favorite. I have a poster print of it hanging on the wall at home. In 2010, this photo was used in the onstage video that accompanied the performance of the song "Jazz Man" by Carole King in her "Troubadour Reunion" tour with James Taylor. Even though the photo was in the Creative Commons, the production team courteously asked me for permission to use it, which of course I enthusiastically agreed to."

My Family Circa 1979/80

If you have popped into my blog in the past, you will know that I love to share photographs from the 1970's. Well, this time round, instead of sharing someone else's photographs and memories, I thought I would reach into the vault and share a few of my own.

My mum and dad used to own a huge caravan on a block of land in the beach side town of Anglesea, along the Great Ocean Road in VIC.

I have great memories of Summer holidays and Easters spent down at the Caravan in Anglesea when I was little. And perhaps the fond memories of these holidays spent with my family, are where alot of my love for the 70's & 80's comes from.

The caravan was great fun - except for the odd hairy Huntsman spider dropping in from the huge Gum Trees above it, and the 'Deb' powdered mash potato that mum used to dish up at dinner time. Foul.
There was an outhouse up the back of the block in a tin shed, but as I was the littlest (and maybe because I carried on about going up there on my own because I was afraid of creepy crawlies), I was allowed to use the toilet in the caravan. Just one of the many upsides to being the youngest.

The caravan in Anglesea is now long gone, replaced by a holiday house which we all still love to visit with our own families and children, on long weekends and school holidays.
Every now and then, my brothers, sister and I time it so we are all down there together with our families (usually minus mum and dad - they'd rather steer clear of the beach house when we all converge there!).

It sure gets tight for room when we are all there at once, but I wouldn't trade it for anything.
There is always plenty of ribbing going on, movie marathons, table tennis tournaments, laughs and good times with some of the best people I know.

 Mum and us.

 The caravan! She was huge!!

David in the Annex. It was well set up with for the boys with LEGO,
trucks and cars they would bring down. Foam boogie boards in the back ground.

Dad and us. (Me with the attention span of a flea.)

 Jenny fishing.

 Scott at the breakfast table.
Bunk beds were on the right hand side in that end room.
(Scott fell out of that top bunk bed whilst sleeping many a time - classic.)

Me, wearing dads thongs on the swing. Bull ants were always lurking!

1970s Florida Keys by Flip Schulke

For the Documerica Project (1971-1977), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) hired freelance photographers to capture images relating to environmental problems, EPA activities, and everyday life in the 1970s.

Photographer Flip Schulke documented everyday life in the Florida Keys and New Ulm, Minnesota during the 1970s. Schulke focused on the retired and the lives they lead in these two very different locations.

I found it hard to only select a few shots from Flip Schulke's set, so decided to feature them in two sets: Florida Keys first with Minnesota to follow soon. Original captions under the photographs.

These photos made me smile, and well, ain't that what its all about?
I hope they make someone else smile today too. : )

Skate Days

"I still have this board" - R Sandman

Rich Sandman was a member of the Pepsi Skateboard team back in the 70’s on the East Coast of North America. The team put on shows in various locations in New England and surrounding areas.

Some info on his 70's skate days from Rich himself...

“We went to New York a few times for a few parades including the Macy’s parade, where we skated with Tony Alva during his heyday. Shawn Mulhulland and Steve Ellis AKA Woody Woodflow and later known as Cholo (of Hawaii) were also on the team.  We would end the show jumping the team and then we would pull kids in from the crowds and add them in the middle. We would get up to 12 for the show if we had enough room to get the speed.”  (pictured in the set below)

“Some of the great parks we skated in this era were Cherryhill in NJ, Shooting Star in Mass, Vernon in CT, Centrifical Force in RI and of coarse Yawgoo Valley Ski resort of RI (our roots).
These photographs are mine from the 70’s doing what was the most enjoyable thing we could do back then. Besides skiing, party’s, girls and cars : ).  Some were taken by me, others by my friends, but most by my girlfriend and future wife of 35 years.”

Here's a few of my fave shots from Rich's 'Skate Days' set, along with their original captions by Rich.
You can view more fantastic photographs from the 'Skate Days' set on Flickr here.

Huge thank you to Rich Sandman for allowing me to share his photographs here,
and for being so easy going and an absolute pleasure to deal with.
