For the Documerica Project (1971-1977),
the Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) hired freelance photographers to
capture images relating to environmental
problems, EPA activities, and everyday
life in the 1970s.
Photographer Flip Schulke documented everyday life in the Florida
Keys and New Ulm, Minnesota during the 1970s. Schulke focused on the retired
and the lives they lead in these two very different locations.
I found it hard to only select a few shots from Flip Schulke's set, so decided to feature them in two sets: Florida Keys first with Minnesota to follow soon. Original captions under the photographs.

Wow, South Beach has certainly changed! It doesn't look like that photo of Granny's Sundries anymore. In the 70s it was rundown and inhabited mostly by the elderly, but now mostly what you see are the young, the affluent and the glamorous.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for commenting Dana. That is really interesting about the area now. I wonder when the changes started there - late 80's into the 90's? I was watching a show on the 80's the other night. A part of the show talked about how lifestyles changed so much in the 80's. Up until then, people truly lived withing their means. But the 80's saw the age of the credit card, and want. Families wanting bigger, better houses despite the average family getting smaller in size, and fancy new cars like their neighbours had.
