The Yo-Yo

Coke, Fanta and Sprite Yo-Yo's were huge in the 1980's.

I could never pull out those super cool tricks like
Rock the Baby, Walk the Dog, and Around the World.
The Throw Down was all I had. (Technically not a trick, but it's all I got.)

Great clip of the 1989 UK Coca Cola Yo-Yo Spinner Campaign and Competition.
These guys make it look so easy!

  1. When were you born, little one? I remember Coke yo-yos from the 70s. They looked different from the ones above - more reflective, like the rear brake lights on a car. (I could only do the thrown-down. And 'Round the World just involved spinning the fully-extended yoyo above my head taking out anyone who happened to be chillin' nearby).

  2. Hi MMMC! I was born in 76'. I remember my older siblings having those reflective bright Coke & Fanta yo-yo's. They were very cool. LOL - thats exactly what my Around the World attempts involved too.x

  3. I can remember waaaay back in '88, A 'troupe' of sorts visited my primary school, showing off how to do all those cool tricks. I was terrible at them! I'm pretty sure I had a coke yo-yo just like that one, it came from a showbag.
Just found your blog via Tiny Savages... I think I'm in love <3

    1. Hi Cassandra! Glad you found me : )
My husband remembers a troupe visiting his school too - ahhhh the 80's.
I think most of my yo-yo's were from showbags too. x

  4. I sucked at yo-yo-ing.
It was HUGE at my all girls school. So much so that they banned it. Girls were taking out pedestrians in the city on their way to and from school! Ha!
I remember I had one of those plastic beginner yo-yos (what chance did I have? stick an 'L' on my forehead, why don't you Mum!), next step up were the wooden ones, then came the fancy reflective yo-yos MMC mentions in her comment. I had friends who could do all the tricks, me, I was just happy if it went down and back up again more than once! See ya. Oh and thanks for the memories Donna x

    1. LOL, a plastic beginners yo-yo - thats gold.
It's harder than it looks I reckon! There was only so many times I could pull out the Throwdown before it was clearly evident I had no real skill. Good fun though.x

  5. One nice yo-yo. I was pretty awesome at yo-yo-ing. My son had one the other day and I picked it up and did a basic trick. He almost didn't believe it. Like I had cast a spell.

    1. How cool Rebecca! A master in our midst! I laughed out loud when I read your comment - "Like I had cast a spell". x

  6. I remember the yo-yo craze, but I'm so much older than all of you that I was the horrible teacher taking up the offending yo-yo when a student wouldn't put it away in class. Trying to balance being a totally free spirited rebel in "real life" and an authority figure/disciplinarian in the classroom sucked sometimes...LOL

    1. I think you would've been an amazing teacher Dana!
I'm hoping you gave 'Around the World' a shot in a quiet moment alone before you gave the confiscated yo-yo back to the student.x
