"Buy the World a Coke" Hilltop Coca-Cola commercial first aired in the USA in 1971.
The commercial features a multicultural collection of teenagers, portraying a positive message of hope and love.
The jingle proved so popular it was recorded as a single by The Hillside Singers, and later by The New Seekers as a full length song "I'd like to Teach the World to Sing" with all Coke references dropped. The song was a hit and both groups had success with the single.
In the mid seventies, another version of the commercial was filmed
for the Christmas holiday season.
Might all seem abit hearts and flowers for some.
But I reckon the world could do with a bit of hearts and flowers at the moment.
And besides that, I like it when someone buys me a Coke and keeps me company.
I like it very much. Coke is it.
I'll buy you a coke any day to share in your company x
ReplyDeleteThanks Pippa!! And ditto! xx
DeleteYou know, and this is weird, the only time (apart from when I was a kiddo) I drank Coke was when I was pregnant. Coke (the proper stuff) and meat pies. No lie. Almost as bad as smoking!?
ReplyDeleteI remember those ads, although I thought the song came first and then the ads (always learning). I really like the spirit of your last paragraph Donna x
Coke and meat pies - right on!! Love it.
DeleteThanks Kylie.xx
I remember so well when that commercial first came out. As hokey as it sounds to say that a commercial was very moving, it actually was. Incidentally, that was a year after I finished college, and I was 23 years old. And, yes, I did look like those fresh-faced hippie girls. :)
ReplyDeleteI would love to see some pics of you in your hippie days Dana. And I agree that the commercial is quite moving. Not hokey at all - and if some say it is, I'm happy to be hokey with you : ) xx
DeleteI use to catch myself humming that tune to myself during my college days. And like Dana, I looked like one of those fresh faced hippie girls, too.
ReplyDeleteHi Terri! The tune sure does stick around in your head! Thanks for popping by. : )
