I recently wore this T Shirt out to the shops to grab a few things.
At the check out as I was paying, the young girl said to me "Oh, who's on your T Shirt?"
She leaned in for a closer look and said "Oh, The Wizard of Oz!"
I looked down at the front of my T Shirt to make sure I hadn't just crossed
over into an Alternate Universe and changed my T Shirt in the process.
"Errr, actually...it's STAR WARS." I replied incredulously.

This was greeted with a blank look. "But it has the Tin Man on it?!" she said.
The TIN MAN???!!
I shifted my feet while I gathered my thoughts to politely reply "No, that's C3-PO...
from the movie STAR WARS....".
There wasn't an ounce of recognition in her eyes.

I smiled, thanked her and swiftly gathered my bags to exit the store.
What I should have said is...
"I find your lack of faith disturbing.
That's C-3PO man! A protocol droid, fluent in six million forms of communication including the binary language of moisture vaporators and Bocce. He and his counterpart R2-D2 were involved in many missions and adventures with the Rebellion against the Evil Empire in one of the greatest movie franchises of ALL TIME!! You have much to learn young Padawan".
Then backed out of the store doing light saber sounds & moves with a rolled up newspaper.

When I was in my early 40s, one of my students asked me what year I was born. I told him 1948. He looked at me very closely, brow furrowed, and said with complete seriousness, "Wow...I didn't know anyone from the 1940s was still alive."
ReplyDeleteIt's kinda weird to find out that "the younger generation" considers you and all your belongings unfamiliar relics from a bygone era. At least she didn't think you were dead. LOL
Hi Dana, exactly! She looked at me like I was the one who had gone mad and didn't recognise the Tin Man on my T Shirt.
DeleteThat's hilarious that your student said that to you. x
Bahhhh!! Laughing right now! Midcentury Zombie?
DeleteWTF? ....really I will put StarWars on the curriculum, we shan't have this happen again!
ReplyDelete...poor thing bless her! She does not know what she says!
Xx
Hi Pippa, I pondered the conversation all the way back to the car that day. She knew the Wizard Of OZ - surely she'd come across STAR WARS at some point?! I should've immediately gone back into the shop, got the DVD box set and given it to her on my way out asking for a full report back at the end of the week. x
Deleteand that right there is why the world is heading for the crapper!!......please tell me next week you are heading to the shops dressed as chewy?....we must educate the less fortunate! x
ReplyDeleteHi Allison, Lol - exactly! I'll go in as Chewy or Princess Leia with two bread rolls from the bakery next door attached to my ears. x
DeleteOh, the ignorance! What an ultra cool t- shirt!!!
ReplyDeleteHa - thanks Tove! It was thrifted t shirt from a while back - I was pumped when I found it! x
DeleteYoungsters today, they know nothin!
ReplyDelete(we have made sure to edumacate our girls properly!)
That's good to hear Kylie! x
DeleteYou are hilarious Donna...and so knowlegable too! x
ReplyDeleteHi Jane, It's abit embarassing how much of a STAR WARS geek I am. x
DeleteSeriously, what happened to poor Gen-Y?? Even our Gen-Z children know every character in Star Wars. Yes, It kills me that they prefer the newer 3 movies to the older 3 but I can live with that. And yes, this poor young girl knew The Wizard of Oz at least, but has clearly only watched it once in her life if she thinks that's the Tin Man! Was she thinking Chewy was the Scarecrow?? Wow, poor deprived girl. Im so sad she missed out on watching and re watching Star Wars and The Wizard of Oz about 300 times as a child like the rest of us! ;)
ReplyDeleteAgreed Jen! I pondered that myself. Perhaps she thought Chewy was the Cowardly Lion? I might wear the T Shirt in there again soon, and put a Wizard of OZ transfer on the back of the t shirt - just for kicks.
DeleteSeriously? That is both ridiculous and pathetic at the same time. Okay, I have a 15-year-old boy and he would NEVER make this mistake. Will you be angry, though, if I told you there is a pretty good chance that he can't identify the Tin Man?
ReplyDeleteHi Rebecca, lol - no - definitely not angry about the Tin Man. It's your sons recognition of the Galaxy Far Far Away that matters. : )
Deletehahahah! so funny!! so she must have mistook chewbacca for the lion, loved your frocktober debut xx
ReplyDeleteThanks Linda! Happy to be a part of it (despise having my photo taken, but it's for a good cause.) Hope you are well. x
DeleteI dare you to do that (but if you do, can you call me first so I can come and watch!)
ReplyDeleteHa! Yes indeed Bec. You can film it, then we'll upload to Youtube. : )
DeleteAh... the force is strong with this one... so well versed Donna. Plenty of mock sabre fights going on with our gen y'ers, albeit with the plastic packaging from the window blinds for the Reno cottage. Perhaps her version of The Wizard of Oz was the Diana Ross/ Michael Jackson one? Cool shirt!
ReplyDeleteHi Simmone! Good to hear your crew are partaking in mock light saber fights. You've taught them the ways of the force well. Yes, perhaps she thought it was The Wiz? I shall sing Ease on Down the Road to her next time I'm in there. x
DeleteToo funny Donna. Seriously if she's old enough to understand the Wizard of Oz, she's old enough to know Star Wars - she needed that light sabre lesson ;)
ReplyDeleteHi Carli! Agreed. Wizard of OZ was made in 1939 - STAR WARS 1977. Perhaps free to air TV should play the STAR WARS films more. Wizard of OZ seems to be on quite a bit - when they aren't playing True Lies or 50 First Dates. ; )
