Judi Oyama - Skating Photos

I love these fantastic photos of skater Judi Oyama,
early in her skating career.

Judi began skating in 1973 when she was 13 years old,
and still competes in slalom racing today at 52!

Judi founded Maximum Impact Design in 1987,
designing graphics for surf, snow and skateboard brands worldwide.

She is also President of Board Rescue, a non for profit corporation
dedicated to providing skateboard equipment to children: targeting
low-income children and at risk-youth.

HUGE thank you to Judi for allowing me to share these brilliant photos here.

I have added Judi's captions with each photo (from Flickr) ,
as each shot has it's own unique story, and they are a great read.

Never thought it would be a cover shot three decades later.

Kauai 1978 - Fun days no pads no helmet. Living dangerously. On Oyama Street. Really.
Spent 5 weeks in Hawaii at the end of 1978 right after the Skateboardmania tour ended.
I always had a board. I sent it home thinking I was going to take a break and there won't be any skate spots. Tossed my converse shoes in the trash after a muddy hike and the next day I meet a guy who asks me out of the blue if I skateboard.
He lent me this board and invited me to session at his ramp. I had to buy some new shoes!

Winchester Skatepark San Jose, January 1979 - After 5 weeks in Hawaii morning session
in the 10 foot pink bowl Steve Caballero on the deck. He is around 14 years old.
Wore Nikes way back when. Told the reps at Magic back in the day but who listens to a girl.

100 degree plus weather super fun. Jamie Goldman's dad was the downhill king.

Winchester Skatepark washboard San Jose 1976 - All time favorite skateparks.
Broke my ankle and dislocated my foot doing a frontside air on the washboard.
Was a great place to learn tricks. 8 foot fast and smooth.
Tried to pull an air and waited too long to bail. Lesson learned.
Photo my dad: J-Gordon padded shorts Park Rider Wheels and a 29" 5Ply,
Premier helmet and oh yea Nikes before they realized they could be skate shoes.

Freaky Friday - She Mullet

Few things simultaneously intrigue, excite and disturb me
the way a good 'she mullet' does.

Here are a few of my favourites...

Mullet fun is doubled when shared with a friend.

Tinny, tank top and a mullet - Trifecta.

A mini she mullet!
Bless her heart.

Happy Australia Day!

Celebrated annually on 26th January, the date
commemorates the arrival of the First Fleet to Australia in 1788.

I Am Australian - originally a poem written in 1987,
by Bruce Woodley (The Seekers) & Dobe Newton (The Bushwackers).

Released as a single in 1997 by trio Judith Durham (The Seekers),
Russell Hitchcock (Air Supply) and Mandawuy Yunupingu (Yothu Yindi).

But, it's the Telstra Ad version of the song, used by the
telecommunications company in 2003, that I love best.

Enjoy and BBQ!

A Fish Called Wanda 1988

Man, there are so many good scenes in this film,
it was hard to select one. But this particular one makes
me laugh outloud everytime.

It's poor Ken and the Ca Ca Ca Cathcart Towers Hotel...

Retro Playground Equipment - Miracle Flying Pony Swing

I came across this advert from 1962 for 'Miracle Flying Pony' swings,
and remembered a photo of my siblings and myself on a set of these very swings in a park on The Strand in Williamstown circa 1980.

Melbourne city in the background.

(I kindly cropped out the long white socks & sandals
effect my brothers had going on in this photo!)

First record you ever bought?

Can you remember the first record you ever bought with your own money?

I remember it being a big deal being able to go out and buy my own music.

I had the old family record player (handed down from my sister) in my room, and the sound was so much better than what my little tape player could manage with cassettes, so records it was.

The first two 45' singles I bought were
'Got My Mind Set On You' by George Harrison and
'Chained to the Wheel' by The Black Sorrows.

Promising start for my musical taste.
Little did I know that NKOTB
were around the corner with 'The Right Stuff' - and I was gone.

Elvis: That's The Way It Is

Elvis: That's The Way It Is, was released in November 1970.
The documentary film follows Elvis as he prepares for opening night of
The Elvis Summer Festival
at The International Hotel, Las Vegas in August 1970.

The movie contains alot of behind the scenes footage,
rehearsals with the band and the concert itself.

Original Trailer for the film...

Pics found here and here

And finally, one of my favourite songs from the concert, Suspicious Minds.
Elvis slowly builds the song then goes off like a cracker with gyrations to boot.
