Footloose - End Dance Scene 1984 vs 2011

I love a movie remake - especially an 80's remake.

Some have definitely been done better than others (think FAME 2009 - disaster!)
The Footloose remake is as good as it could possibly be.
It stayed very true to the original film, which I think is the secret to its success (and any remakes success in my opinion) and retained several songs from the original movie.

I was searching Youtube to watch the final dance scene of Footloose 1984 and 2011 to compare them.  And low and behold - someone has already made a video using cuts of both versions of the scene - God bless the internet.

The original seems less choreographed, and more vibrant and fun.
The kids really seem to be cutting loose, Footloose (sorry, had to be done), making the most of their chance to dance. The final dance in the new version seems a little more sedate to me.

So, although I did enjoy the remake, I'm afraid you just can't go past The Bacon.
It's 1984 for me.

Your thoughts?

Jubilee Swap - Lucy Violet Vintage

I signed up this year to be part of the 'Jubilee Swap' over at Faith Hope and Charity Shopping.
Lakota (of Faith Hope & Charity Shopping) matched bloggers who signed up from all over the world, with a partner to swap items with.
I was super lucky to be matched with one of my favourite Australian bloggers -  Kylie over at Lucy Violet Vintage.
In the swap, you had to send your partner a min of 3 items, a thrifted item (but if all items were thrifted - great!), a handmade item (either by yourself, a friend or an Etsy purchase etc) & at least one item with a Jubilee theme.

Kylie sent me this gorgeous package (even the package was Jubilee themed!) which included:

1) Hand made apron with 2 gorgeous pockets on the front of beautiful English landmarks.
2) A handmade ring by Pat over at A Treasured Past in a very cute Jubilee themed box.
3) A 1977 Queens Silver Jubilee teatowel.
4) English Breakfast Tea (T is for Twinings) .
5) All packed beautifully in a Diamond Jubilee Tin with a lovely note on a vintage London postcard.

Thank you Kylie for all the time and effort you have put into the swap and for all my beautiful gifts. I am thrilled with my treasures and you have certainly made my first 'swapping' experience a good one.
And a thank you to Lakota at Faith Hope & Charity Shopping for organising it all.

I have finally completed my purchases for Kylie (she set the benchmark pretty high & I had to regroup upon receiving hers!!) but her package will be on its way to WA this week!

While the closing date for the swap is not until the 7th of July, alot of people have already completed the swap and are adding links of pictures of their loot onto the Faith Hope & Charity Shopping site here if you'd like pop over & check out what other people received.

Hooroo!

Documerica Project - Photographs by Marc St.Gil

For the Documerica Project (1971-1977), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) hired freelance photographers to capture images relating to environmental problems, EPA activities, and everyday life in the 1970s.

The U.S. National Archives digitized more than 15,000 photographs from the series, and they can now be seen online.

Marc St. Gil was one of nearly one hundred photographers hired for DOCUMERICA. His assignment was to document the water and air pollution crisis in and around Houston, Texas.

While documenting the apparent pollution issues, St. Gil also captured striking images of rural life in 1970s in the Houston and San Antonio areas.

 ****

Here are a few of my favourites from Marc St.Gil's set,
along with the photographs original captions.

Fame - Red Light

Great song 'Red Light' by Linda Clifford and scene from the 1980 film FAME.

Leroy (Gene Anthony Ray) helps a friend audition for the New York High School of Performing Arts, but ends up stealing the show and instead secures himself one of the highly coveted positions.

Watching Leroy's friend in this clip always reminds me to liberally apply Antiperspirant Deodorant before slipping on my pale blue leotard and hitting the dance floor.

1964

I just love this fantastic photograph titled
'Dating Teens 1964' by Dee Halpern of Southern Day.

"That is my boyfriend Dave and I in the summer of '64 in Sarasota, Florida.
We were married in 1968 and are still married to this day. 44 years."
- Dee Halpern

Cool photo and story.
Many thanks to Dee for allowing me to share this pic here.

I have a real thing for brightly coloured retro cups and mugs.

This great collection belongs to Stephen of Target Retrospective.

Majority of this particular collection is Staffordshire Pottery,
for those in the pottery know.
(This excludes me. 'There is much to learn my young apprentice.')

Big thanks to Stephen for allowing me to show his cool collection here.

Rocky IV 1985

I love an underdog story, and they don't come much better
than the Rocky series - all six of them.

My favourite of the Rocky films is Rocky IV.
Released in 1985, the fourth installment of the Rocky series
was the most financially successful Rocky film.

Rocky travels to the USSR to avenge the death of his former
opponent and best friend Apollo Creed.
Ivan Drago is the enemy. A seemingly heartless,
Russian fighting machine, responsible for Apollo's death.

One of my favourite scenes is Rocky's training montage, in preparation
for his fight with Ivan Drago, set to the tune 'Hearts on Fire' sung by John Cafferty.

Drago has the high tech equipment, a large team of trainers, & steroids.
In contrast, Rocky uses the elements, and trains with sheer hard work,
 determination and heart.

(My stomach hurts just watching Rocky's leg raises
where his trainer Duke says 'No pain, No pain!')

This clip makes me want to run to the top of a mountain
(or maybe just the top of my drive way) and yell out
"Dragggooooooo!!!!"

California Bay Area 1970

I love these fantastic photographs from the year 1970
by LANCE.V.NIX. on Flickr.

There are so many great photographs in Lance's collection,
I found it really difficult to select only a few.
So, I have so decided to present them in two sets.
In this instance - one set just wasn't enough!

A huge thank you to Lance for allowing me share these
wonderful photographs here.

The first selection of shots is from the set titled

"Random mid day shots I took while walking around the University of California, Berkeley Campus during the days of the Hippie Movement"
 - Lance Nix

The second selection of shots is from the set titled

"At loose ends after my discharge from the U.S.Army I wandered around California for about 4 months before I finally landed a civilian job. I ended up at my cousin's place in Mission Beach for a week or so during that time."
- Lance Nix
