Ever since the Mad Hatters tea party scene in Disney's Alice in Wonderland (1951), and then seeing them for myself above the Tea Cup ride at Disneyland in 1985, I have loved paper lanterns.
Whilst watching an episode of Here's Lucy recently (well, I wasn't really watching it, it was just on in the background....), I noticed the paper lanterns they had used to decorate the set for that particular scene. This got me thinking about many other old movies I love, which also feature paper or silk lanterns.
So festive, happy, colourful & dreamy - you can see why Paper & Silk lanterns were so popular then, and still are today!
Here are some of those movies I remember with their 'paper lantern' scenes.
(I have listed details of what part of the clip you will find the lanterns in if it's not at the start.)

Enjoy!
On Moonlight Bay 1951 - Lanterns around the lake.
One of my favourite Doris Day movies, along with it's sequel By the Light of the Silvery Moon. Must do a post soon!
Pollyanna 1960 - Hanging from the bikes & from 2.50 mins in.
The Bazaar has lanterns strung up all over the stalls. Gorgeous!
See them best from 50 secs in - Hanging in grandmothers garden.
Lanterns hanging from the roof and around the dance floor of the club.
Here's Lucy 1968 - All Alone number. From 50 secs in along the border of the set. Check the dude at the left of Lucy with the beads - he's got the moves.
Lanterns also feature in a tonne of more recent movies too, from Jerry Maguire (garden wedding scene) to Mamma Mia! and The Hangover (also wedding scenes). More info at The Hanging Lantern Co.
Mad Hatters Tea Party - Alice in Wonderland.
The Tea Cup ride at Disneyland California!
