1970's Jamaica Tourist Board Poster

I have been slowly re discovering Pinterest and have been pouring
over some fantastic 1970's posters on there.
This one caught my eye - perhaps for obvious reasons (kinda hard not to notice it!),
but also because I remembered it from a scene in the 1988 film Cocktail.
I found some information on the beautiful model Sintra Arunte-Bronte,
on a site called Jamaica Gleaner...

 ***

Sintra Arunte-Bronte caught the eye of a photographer who had been commissioned
by the Jamaica Tourist Board to do the poster in 1972.
The photographer had been scouting for a woman to portray the beauty of an
island woman. It took seven and a half hours to capture the right effect.
Sintra said at the time she never thought the poster would have such an international impact.
The poster now graces the walls of airports, Jamaica Tourist Board offices worldwide,
hotel lobbies and travel agencies internationally.
Other than the few dollars she was paid to model, Sintra never received any royalties.

Here is the short clip of the poster in the movie Cocktail...

I used to dig Tom Cruise back then.
Long before Katie, the couch incident and beyond...

  2. She was a very beautiful woman, and it's a shame she hasn't benefited more from the poster. I know what you mean about Tom Cruise. When public figures do bizarre or hateful things in their personal lives (Gary Busey, Mel Gibson and Michael Richards from Seinfeld also come to mind), it does tend to taint their images permanently. Tom Cruise has lost his appeal for me, and I refuse to watch a Mel Gibson film.

    1. Isn't she stunning?! Gorgeous model.
I hear ya about public figures. Gone are the days when their personal life was their personal life due to social media, gossip mags and paparazzi etc. There is always a camera or mobile phone at the ready when a star slips up, and I certainly don't envy that.
But yes, sometimes it goes too far. Their actions and/or words are unacceptable and fans simply walk away.

    1. He was great as 'Maverick' in Top Gun - "I feel the need, the need for speed!" and A Few Good Men. I actually really liked Far & Away too with Nicole Kidman when they were in love.(I may be the only person in the world that liked that film). But I remember him in The Outsiders too - he was so young!!

  4. Oh my. She is a beauty. And on Tom Cruise. If you don't have anything nice to say, best to say nothing at all. But that was saying something, yes?

  5. She is beautiful isn't she? I loved Tom in his Top Gun & Cocktail days too. I still love Top Gun but Tom has lost his appeal :)

  6. Never been a Tom Cruise fan Donna, but "I was working as waitress in a cocktail bar" when the movie was released and my workmates and I went to see it (a few cocktails beforehand, to get us through!). It was okay - now I've got that song stuck in my head though - thanks!

    1. You were never on board the 'Cruise' liner Kylie? Fair enough. Not every ones bag - and def not mine these days. Cocktail is an easy watch - great cast.

  7. What a great poster. I wonder if you (by that, I don't mean 'you' personally) could get away with it now-days? I wonder if I would be horrified and full of damnation if it didn't look so 70s and cool ... so many questions inspired by beauty.

I never liked Tom Cruise. I was more of a Michael J. Fox fan. Ah bless.

    1. Hi MMMC! I do love Michael J Fox. You can't beat him in the first Back to the Future film.
Hmmm, I think you're probably right about the poster and how it be received these days. God bless the 70's.
