Freaky Friday - Festive Family Sleepwear

I believe I would launch myself through the nearest window if my family suggested we all wear matching sleepwear.
Even the kids on this shoot (bar one) are looking off set like
'I want out of here - NOW!'
And whats with the hats? Will there be baking involved?

Retro Fireplace & Loungeroom

Melbourne's burst of warm winter weather has gone, and today
I have the fire back on.
You can't beat a cosy fire on a cold, rainy day.

Paper & Silk Lanterns

Ever since the Mad Hatters tea party scene in Disney's Alice in Wonderland (1951), and then seeing them for myself above the Tea Cup ride at Disneyland in 1985, I have loved paper lanterns.

Whilst watching an episode of Here's Lucy recently (well, I wasn't really watching it, it was just on in the background....), I noticed the paper lanterns they had used to decorate the set for that particular scene. This got me thinking about many other old movies I love, which also feature paper or silk lanterns.

So festive, happy, colourful & dreamy - you can see why Paper & Silk lanterns were so popular then, and still are today!

Here are some of those movies I remember with their 'paper lantern' scenes.
(I have listed details of what part of the clip you will find the lanterns in if it's not at the start.)

Enjoy!

On Moonlight Bay 1951 - Lanterns around the lake.
One of my favourite Doris Day movies, along with it's sequel By the Light of the Silvery Moon. Must do a post soon!

Pollyanna 1960 - Hanging from the bikes & from 2.50 mins in.
The Bazaar has lanterns strung up all over the stalls. Gorgeous!

Blue Hawaii 1961 - Can't Help Falling in Love number.
See them best from 50 secs in - Hanging in grandmothers garden.

Bye Bye Birdie 1963 - Lot of Livin' dance number. From 1 min in.
Lanterns hanging from the roof and around the dance floor of the club.

Here's Lucy 1968 - All Alone number. From 50 secs in along the border of the set. Check the dude at the left of Lucy with the beads - he's got the moves.

Lanterns also feature in a tonne of more recent movies too, from Jerry Maguire (garden wedding scene) to Mamma Mia! and The Hangover (also wedding scenes). More info at The Hanging Lantern Co.

Blue Hawaii 1961

I love this film!
The King, great songs, beautiful girls and gorgeous Hawaii as the backdrop, Blue Hawaii was an instant commercial and financial success.
It was Elvis' eighth film and also his most successful.
The film featured 14 songs, more than any other Elvis film, and the soundtrack spent a total of 79 weeks on Billboards pop album chart, with 20 of those weeks at #1.

Original Album Cover

Elvis stars as Chad Gates, whose family owns a successful pineapple plantation in Hawaii. Chad has just returned from the Army and his family are eager for him to pursue the family business. Instead, Chad wants to carve his own path, and takes a job as a tourist guide at his girlfriend Maile's (Joan Blackman) travel agency. The new job takes him to Hawaii's most beautiful sites and allows him plenty of spare time to cavort on the beach with his Hawaiian beach buddies, much to the dismay of his family.

Location shooting began in March 1961 on the islands of Oahu & Kauai, and was finished by mid April. The cast and crew then returned to Hollywood, and filming was completed by late May 1961.

Here are a few of my favourite numbers from the movie.
Enjoy!

Rock a Hula Baby

Beach Boy Blues

Slicin' Sand
'Dance dance dance till your toes get tan,
We're gonna have us a ball on the beach slicin' sand'
Love it!

Retro Caravan - The Flash

Andrew and Zoe are the owners of this super cool 1968 Durovan Caravan,
aka 'The Flash'.
It has belonged in the same family since it was purchased new.
'The Flash' is currently being prepped for an 11 week road trip over the Australian landscape from Queensland to Broome. Zoe will be creating a blog to document the adventures of the 'The Flash' and family on the trip. Can't wait to see it!

Andrew and Zoe recently holidayed with our friends Dan & Kylie, in beautiful Hervey Bay. Kylie, is a talented family photographer, of Love Lives Here Photography, & kindly took some photos of 'The Flash' for me (thanks Kylie!).
Kylie, also a vintage and retro enthusiast, takes amazing photos with babies and little people and has a really beautiful website. Pop on over!

Big thanks to Andrew and Zoe for letting me blog 'The Flash',
and their beautiful family.
Enjoy!
