Blog Link In - Golden Circle Bake Off

A few weeks back, I was lucky enough to win a gorgeous apron from the lovely Kylie over at
In addition to my beautiful apron, Kylie included several other fantastic retro treasures in my parcel, including this Golden Circle Tropical Recipe Book.

It's packed full of gag inducing Pineapple recipes, and Kylie had the great idea to each
pick a dish to whip up for a blog link in - or bake off if you will.

It took me a while to decide upon a suitable dish to make, but as I have a real distaste for savoury cooking with jelly or gelatin (as seen on previous Freaky Friday posts here & here), it had to be the glorious Sunlit Salad.

This is the book version.
Grated Carrot, Crushed Pineapple, Crushed Walnuts (optional), Vinegar, Salt and Pineapple Juice all mixed into a Lemon Jelly.

And this is my version following the recipe step by step...

Somewhat more flacid (for want of a better word) and unbelievably
less impressive than it's cook book counterpart.
There were jelly bits going everywhere when I tried to set up the plate for a photoshoot.
No fear of me ever getting a job as a food stylist.

Are you feeling my freestylin' with the garnish? Home Economics 101.
The ham I had set aside for garnish was consumed by others in the household,
so I had to do abit of 'MacGyvering'.

About an hour after the photoshoot, my Sunlit Salad had spread all over the
plate to look more like Sunlit Soup.

So there you have it!
My offering of sweet tropical Pineapple fare.
Please head on over to Kylie at Lucy Violet Vintage here who I believe has taken
care of sweets for the occasion. Can't wait to see it!!

Sorry Ruby. I tried.

  1. Brilliant Donna. Awesomely so (even though it looks a bit like spew) Love your freestylin - that pineapple daisy is the bomb. I reckon Rubes would def approve. If there was a first prize in our cook off, you'd be going home with the blue ribbon xxx

    1. LOL - thanks man. I reckon it'd be a tie.
Loving the 'soggy beetroot sandwich' pink colour comparison with your delectable Coral Reef Pie. Tasty.

  2. OMG...you and Kylie completely had me in stitches with this one. I do have to say that your versions looks a tad less formidable than Ruby's...almost as if your negative attitude toward gelatin dishes hurt its feelings and made it a little weepy. Frankly, though, I'm glad the ham was pilfered, because the idea of ham and Jello makes me a little queasy. All in all, I'll give you credit for the stem of your flower. It's prettier than Ruby's...but next time, remember that I like walnuts. ;)

    1. LOL - yes, the ham would have taken the foul factor to new heights!
Walnuts will definitely make the cut next time. x

    1. Tuna and Jelly - two words that should never appear together in a recipe I feel. Ha ha. I'm on it for next time. : )

  4. Oh good God, Kylie is right, it DOES look like puke. Did you, dare I ask, try it? I'm feeling a little queasy at the very thought......xx

    1. Ha - yes, I should've taken a pic of it when it had melted into a chunky soup - very pukesque. I tried a glob that fell off when originally transferring from mould to plate. It was vile, but a good cook (?!) must always taste their dish!

  7. Good grief! I can't believe you made this! Good on you. Gelatine makes my stomach turn. Did you eat it?

These two posts hit the hilarious factor for me. This is what blogging should be about. Keep up the good work.

  8. I have this same cookbook...dare I say, family treasure? My mother gave it to my paternal grandmother, inscribed, for mother's day or somesuch. When I "inherited" it, a sense of duty prevented me from tossing it but perhaps I shall revisit the pages and try a recipe and link in with all this lurid catastrophe.

  9. So funny. I started a pineapple series A while back And was planning to cook every recipe from that book and chronicle it all. But there is only so much tinned pineapple you can inflict on a family! Love this. xx
